CBRL seeks a new Honorary Treasurer

Our current Honorary Treasurer, Fiona Salzen, steps down in December 2018 and we are looking for a new Treasurer. Fiona commented:

“I am coming to the end of my four year term as Honorary Treasurer.  It has been a fascinating experience, working with a superb and committed team of staff, Hon Officers and Trustees to support CBRL through a period of change driven by radical changes in our core funding arrangements; the changing needs of the research community; and a backdrop of greater regulation at home and in the Middle East. We are no longer there by post-colonial right – it is a privilege to be able to operate in these lands and to continue, we have to be able to show how we benefit the people of the Levant as well as the UK research community.

The role is a great opportunity to contribute to strategy in areas as diverse as governance, publications and risk management as well as “minding the money”.

I have been privileged to help drive CBRL’s development as a fully independent charity, reducing our dependence on the British Academy and repositioning to broaden our reach and our sources of funding.  Operationally, we have introduced strategic planning and risk management frameworks, outsourced our accounting, and formalised our procedures and controls – all aimed at increasing resilience and flexibility.

Change and uncertainty is “the new normal - and no doubt my successor will face new challenges – but I believe CBRL is now well positioned to thrive in its crucial mission to support and disseminate research on the Levant.  “

Do you know of a member, colleague or friend who would be interested? The role would suit someone with a financial or commercial background able to operate at Board level. Experience of charity accounting and regulation and/or operating in Middle East or similar environments is desirable but a willingness to develop an understanding of the regulatory and financial environments and issues is essential. The role is voluntary and unremunerated, estimated commitment 2 days per month plus quarterly meetings in London.

For further details and for an informal conversation with Fiona about the role please contact CBRL's UK Executive Officer, Rachel Telfer on Tel: 020 79 69 52 96.
